What exactly is a Momo?
Nepali momo dumplings are a type of dumpling popular in Nepal. A dumpling is a small piece of dough, often wrapped around a filling. The dough is usually made from flour and water, and the filling can be different things like meat, vegetables, or cheese. Chicken momos are Nepali chicken dumplings.
In the case of Nepali momos, the dough is usually filled with seasoned meat, or vegetables. They are then shaped into small, round balls or crescents and cooked by steaming or sometimes frying. This cooking method makes the outside of the momo soft and slightly chewy, while the inside is juicy and flavorful. They're often served with a spicy sauce called achar, which adds to their taste. Momos are a simple yet delicious part of Nepali cuisine, loved by many for their tasty fillings and side of achar.

How do Nepali People Eat Momos?
Nepali momos is traditionally steamed and eaten with a tomato based chutney (achar). They are however also enjoyed in various other delicious forms in Nepal. One popular variation is 'Kothey Momo,' where the momos are partially steamed and then pan-fried, giving them a unique texture that is crispy on one side and soft on the other.
'Jhol Momo' is another beloved version, where the steamed momos are served in a flavorful, spicy, and often tangy soup or broth. Very popular street food during the cold months.

'Chilli Momo,' often referred to as 'C-Momo,' is a fusion dish where the steamed momos are stir-fried with spicy sauce, vegetables, and sometimes additional meats. This preparation gives the momos a spicy, savory, and slightly charred flavor, making them a favorite among those who enjoy a bit of heat in their food.
Each of these variations offers a different way to enjoy momos, showcasing the versatility and adaptability of this beloved Nepali dish. Whether steamed, fried, soaked in a broth, or tossed in a spicy sauce, momos remain a central part of Nepali cuisine.
Tips on making Chicken Momo Dumplings even easier!

- Frozen Chopped Onion: Utilize frozen chopped onion to avoid the time-consuming task of peeling and chopping fresh onions.
- Ground Chicken: Opt for ground chicken to skip the step of mincing or grinding the meat yourself.
- Frozen Ginger Paste: Instead of fresh ginger, use ready-made frozen ginger paste for convenience and uniform flavor.
- Simplified Pleating: Instead of intricate pleating, simply fold the wrappers in half and seal the edges for an easier method.
Suggested Alterations to the Chicken Momo Dumplings
- Add Vegetables to the Filling: Enhance the chicken filling with finely chopped vegetables like cabbage, carrots, or spinach for added nutrition and flavor.

Momo Wrapper
- 400 gram Plain flour
- 200 mls Water Warm
Momo Filling
- 400 gram Chicken Mince
- 300 gram White Onions Finely chopped or grated
- 10 stalks Fresh coriander Finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon Ginger paste
- 2 teaspoon Salt
- 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
- 2 tablespoon Vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoon Cornflour Add the cold water to the cornflour and mix well
- 6 tablespoon Cold Water
- 2 tablespoon Soy sauce
- 2 Green chilli finely chopped
Instructions
Making the Dough
- In a large bowl, add the flour
- Gradually pour warm water into the bowl, a small amount at a time. Add just enough water to start forming a more solid dough structure. You don't want the dough to get too sticky, as the starch soaks up water, it will slowly become softer.

- Mix and knead the dough for several minutes until it becomes soft and pliable.

- Cover the dough with a moist cloth or cling film and let it rest for 10-15 minutes. This will allow the dough to relax and become more elastic.
Preparing the Filling
- While the dough is resting, you can start preparing the filling for your momos. Place minced meat in a large mixing bowl.
- Add all the momo filling ingredients to a large bowl. Make sure to mix the cornflour and cold water together first before adding to the bowl.
- Mix the ingredients together well using a spatula or ideally using your hands to really mix everything well (you can use a glove)
Making the momo wrappers the easy way
- Sprinkle some flour over a flat surface, such as a tabletop or a large chopping board, to prevent sticking.

- Take the rested dough out of the bowl and place it on a flat surface. Knead the dough ball for a couple of minutes.
- Cut the dough into 4 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball, then roll into a cylinder sausage shape.

- Roll each of the 4 dough balls into a large flat sheet using a rolling pin

- Use a cup or glass to cut out round shapes from the dough. Dust each wrapper with flour to prevent sticking and cover with cling film or a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out.

Filling and Shaping Momos
- Take a wrapper and place a tablespoon of filling in the centre.

- Enclose by folding the tip of the wrapper, making pleats and pinching at the ends. If you want to keep things simple, just fold the circular wrapper in half into a semicircle shape and press the edges together to seal the filling.

- Repeat this process with the remaining wrappers until all the filling is used.
Steaming the Dumplings
- Grease the steamer with vegetable oil before placing the dumplings inside to avoid sticking.
- Place the dumplings in the steamer and steam for about 15 minutes, or until fully cooked.
Serving the Momo
- Serve the momo dumplings with freshly made dip. Enjoy!
