My love for this tea started when I had my first sip in the remote village of Madhesh in the Southeast of Nepal. Locals served it as a post-meal drink made from freshly picked lemongrass, ginger, and black tea. I was amazed by the harmonious blend of flavours and the refreshing taste that left me feeling rejuvenated. This tea has now become a staple in my daily routine and really lifts up my spirits. The recipe for this incredible tea is simple, yet yields an unforgettable flavour. If you are a fan of the zesty taste of lemongrass, then this tea is perfect for you. It is the ideal beverage to start your day on a fresh note or to unwind after a long, tiring day.
Jump to RecipeTo make this tea, you can source fresh lemongrass from your local Asian grocery store or use dried lemongrass tea leaves. The lemongrass is infused with hot water and combined with black tea and ginger, creating a blend of flavours that is simply divine. The aroma of the tea is invigorating and uplifting, and the taste is nothing short of exquisite.
Tips and Pearls for making Lemongrass Black tea

- For the best flavour, use fresh lemongrass or frozen lemon grass. This adds a green flavour to the tea that is hard to achieve with dried lemon grass.
- Don't Overdo the Lemongrass: Adding too much lemongrass or boiling it for too long can turn the tea bitter.
- Balance the Amount of Black Tea: Similarly, adding too much black tea can also turn the tea bitter.
- Store Lemongrass in Freezer: To save money and reduce waste, keep leftover lemongrass in a zipper bag in the freezer. This way, you can have fresh lemongrass available anytime without having to purchase it every time.
- Strain the tea using a fine tea strainer. This will remove any unwanted bits of lemongrass or tea leaves and leave you with a clear and flavourful cup of tea without any residue.
Suggested Alterations
- Mint Leaves: For a refreshing twist, add a few fresh mint leaves to the boiling water along with lemongrass and black tea. Mint adds a cooling effect and complements the citrusy flavor of lemongrass.
- Lemons: To enhance the citrusy flavour of the tea, add a splash of freshly squeezed lemon juice.
- Alter the Sweetener: Other than sugar you can add a sweetener of your choice like agave, maple syrup, or jaggery. Adjust the amount of sweetener according to your taste preference.
- Spices: You can add a pinch of spices like cinnamon, cardamom, or clove to the tea to add depth and warmth.
